Stem Cells to Grow Teeth

Researchers from the University of Tokyo have found a way to grow teeth in mice. Although being slightly smaller than a normal tooth, these grown teeth have all the same properties as natural teeth with the mice even being able to eat with them. This is believed to progress further into humans needing to replace teeth as well and may only be the beginning of future research into growing other parts of the body using stem cell research.
The procedure involves extracting 2 types of stem cells from the mouse embryo with the right characteristics and combing them together. After 5 days of being grown in a lab small tooth buds are placed deep in the jaw bone of the mice where they begin to grow to fully functional teeth. Research on humans is underway, however even if successful it would not be introduced within the next 15 years with costs expected to be up to $4000.
